Classic Comfort Style

Classic Comfort Style

If your decorating taste tends to lean more toward classic, comfortable style, these interior design ideas will help you on your way to giving your home a warm and inviting look using pieces that may already exist in your home as well as new items mixed into it.

Retail furniture stores such as Pottery Barn and Ethan Allen have become style icons for home décor with their classic styles of solid furniture, overstuffed couches and special touches with their accessories. Starting off with a big comfortable couch or sectional that can serve as the focal point can help you begin creating a warm and inviting living area with a classic style.

Once you have decided on a couch for your room, it is then time to decide on other seating arrangements. If your room has the proper space allowance, try adding 2 overstuffed arm chairs to accompany the couch. Placing them in a semi circle around the couch will help your guests feel welcome when they sit down and it will be easy to carry on a conversation with everyone. Placing a large round, square or leather ottoman in the center is a perfect spot for playing games, serving wine or hor d'ouevres.

Accessories play a large role in keeping with a classic style. Bear in mind that you shouldn't be over excessive with your accessories so as not to make your room seem too cluttered. Adding a fabulous clock or a great sculpture can add ambiance to a room. Candles of various sizes can also add a lot of depth to a room. Keep your tables and mantle clean with exception of 1-3 accessories. A good rule of thumb is to always put things together in odd number groups instead of even; for example, placing 3 candles or picture frames together instead of even numbers. Doing this will keep your room from looking too uniformed and will give it a more relaxed feel.

Classic style does not mean boring. While darker colors such as brown, olive greens and reds tend to be what most lean towards when decorating their homes with a classic feel, do not be afraid of adding texture and prints here and there. Adding some great throw pillows or a textured rug can give a lot of depth to your room without overpowering it with a lot of patterns and textures.
